Since Miltenyi Biotec was founded in 1989, the international player has become one of the largest companies in Germany.
Strong growth, increased complexity and increased external requirements from customers and certifiers have created challenges for Miltenyi Biotec that require a structured and transparent approach to processes. The company must be managed more through processes than through functions.
How can we become a highly efficient company as we continue to grow? And how can we fulfil all compliance requirements?
The management asked itself these questions and created a full-time ‘BPM Manager’ position. Markus Lohrmann, the new BPM Manager, worked with the management to develop a common understanding of the added value of process management for Miltenyi Biotec, such as clarifying responsibilities and improving cross-departmental collaboration. The aim was to create a process-oriented organization. BPM&O supported him on this journey.
‘For Miltenyi Biotec, strengthening process orientation is an essential component in ensuring our long-term success. With BPM&O, we have a competent and experienced partner at our side.’ – Markus Lohrmann, BPM Manager, Miltenyi Biotec
BPM Understanding and BPM Competence Centre
In addition to creating a common understanding of BPM and establishing a BPM Competence Centre, the first steps were to design and implement the BPM framework conditions. This includes, for example, a role model, conventions for process modelling and the selection of process-oriented methods.
This was followed by the development of standardized process documentation in ARIS and the implementation of quick wins, meaning the verified success of the concepts in selected pilot processes. One of these processes was the main ‘Offer to Order’ process. This end-to-end process begins with the submission of the product offer and ends with the arrival of the customer order.
With the help of the management workshops accompanied by BPM&O, as well as the in-house training courses designed and carried out, great awareness and interest were raised within the company.
Immediate improvements in the processes came very soon. During the project, the requirement was formulated to be certified under ISO 9001:2015. This was to take place in addition to the regularly required certifications (FDA and ISO 13485).
By harmonizing the ‘Manage Quality’ and ‘Provide Process’ processes, it was possible to design and document a joint process model. The previous ‘static’ Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) were replaced by reports at the touch of a button.
The first audit under ISO 9001:2015 was passed without any deviations. The effort required for certification was reduced compared to other companies.
