A process (also known as a business process) is a recurring sequence of related activities to fulfil an operational task. A process generates a defined work result (output) from a given input through defined work steps.

An example to illustrate this is ‘making coffee’: to make a cup of coffee (output), you need defined inputs. In this case, these are a coffee machine, coffee filter and coffee powder. The defined work steps are: Insert the coffee filter into the machine, then add coffee powder and finally switch on the coffee machine. The sequence of work steps should be organized as efficiently and purposefully as possible.
